Looking Back-This Far We Have Come.
Four days, several hours and some minutes before 2019 sees itself out.
The end of a decade is here. It is time to see how far we have come.
It is time for looking back.
Can you believe how quickly ten years have passed?
Looking Back-Broken and Defeated.
I remember, in vivid detail, where I was this time in 2009. And I mean this in its most literal sense.
There I was standing with my suitcases at an international airport waiting for Little Sis to bring the car around.
I was broken, defeated, needing to be in a different time zone to lick my wounds; I had travelled many miles to get away from it all.
To make sense of all of life’s challenges I had needed to give myself space.
Moving Forward
Fast forward to December 2019 and I am humbled and grateful. Looking back now and I see how much I have grown. I can appreciate the magnitude of the many hurdles I have jumped over. How many ugly fire breathing demons I have conquered. I marvel at the many dreams I have realised, Allah be Praised- and how many I have had to let go. How much I have learned about myself.
There is a myriad of things, still, that remain on my ‘to experience’ list and I can’t wait to get started on them.
Your Turn
As this year comes to a close, I urge you to look back and applaud yourself. I am sure there is a lot that you didn’t think you could survive through and yet you did. You lived to tell about it.
There are things, I am sure, that you think about now and laugh at yourself for your innocence and naivete. That’s always a good thing- to be able to see humour and yourself for all your flaws and imperfections.
I am sure there is a lot you would have done differently in these last 120 months. But look at it this way. The decisions you made then are what have brought you to this precise moment. You will do just fine.
Social You
Ten years ago there was no Snapchat, no Instagram and no Tiktok. Think about how these innovations have changed you. Wonder at what portion of your life you willingly hand over to them. Reflect if you are better off with or without them.
Ponder on your relationships. Marvel at who has come along with you all through this decade. Notice who has come willingly and who has come kicking and screaming.
Remember who isn’t here anymore and wonder when you are next. You can’t escape dying but you can make sure you have enough packed for that journey.
Look in the mirror- look without judgement. Smile at what you have become, appreciate all your supposed flaws. You are made in the most perfect design.
Keep smiling, nurture and water the seeds of hope in your heart. Help cultivate the same to those around you.
Have a plan, a blueprint for where you see yourself ten years from now. But know that there is a Merciful God who will steer you towards what is better for you than what you have envisioned for yourself.
Thank You
I celebrate each and every one of you my dear readers. May Allah the Almighty ease your journey and illuminate your path. May we meet again within the sentences of this my online home where you are always welcome. Where I hope you can find your best self.
Until next year by Allah’s Will.
